Project Cars is the highly ambitious, crowdfunded racer that looked to win us all over as the search for a complete, fully-working racing game continues. With its eye-popping visuals and an unprecedented level of realism (in some gameplay footage you can actually see cars’ suspension systems shake) it looked to be one of the best looking games out there too and when Bandai Namco picked it up for publishing last year, things seemed to be going to plan. Sadly, towards the end of 2014, developer Slightly Mad Studios and Bandai Namco announced that the game would be delayed until March, 2015.

A few months later and the two companies were thought to be in a pre-release marketing push, ahead of Project Cars’ release on consoles and PC in a few weeks time. That’s not quite the case, however, as the game has had to go back in the workshop for some extra tweaks, meaning that Project Cars has been delayed once more to April.

They developers explained that “the slight shift of the release date is due to final adjustments in the game, that are required to provide to the fans with the best gaming experience they could have”. This is probably fair to say given that last year’s racing games had game-breaking issues that spoiled everyone’s fun. To put it another way, Project Cars fans should be happy the game isn’t willing to risk an early release date if the quality isn’t up to par. And, as backers of the game have put forward over $3 million to see their racing game dreams realised, it’s even more important that Project Cars knocks it out of the park.

Furthermore, Ian Bell, Head of Studioat Slightly Mad Studios adds:

Even with those explanations, Project Cars’ delay is still going to be disappointing for some. However, Slightly Mad is aiming for the “most authentic, beautiful, intense, and technically-advanced racing game on the planet” with “the largest track roster of any recent racing game” so hopefully the extra time in the garage will be worth it.

Project Cars will be released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on April 2nd, 2015. (There was no mention of the Wii U version in the statement).
