But while Sunset Overdrive and other XB1 exclusives have released since then, gamers are still waiting on Quantum Break. The game, which was originally supposed to see a 2014 release, was first pushed into this year, and then two months ago was delayed again until 2016. Game delays are par for the course in the gaming industry, but multiple delays after all of the hype Quantum Break had doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. And unfortunately for the game, neither will today’s news.
Matias Myllyrinne, the CEO of Remedy Entertainment, announced Wednesday that he is leaving the company after 15 years in a post on Remedy’s website.
“I’ve been with Remedy since 1999 - this is a long time,” the CEO wrote. “It is time for me to move on.”
Myllyrinne’s destination is Wargaming, the developer behind World of Tanks. Myllyrinne was quick to point out in his post that work on Quantum Break will be unaffected by his departure.
“Quantum Break looks amazing and the team is working hard to build it into the game that you deserve,” Myllyrinne wrote. “It will be worthy of the Remedy brand.”
It’s good to hear that the CEO is willing to make such a strong statement about Quantum Break on his way out the door, but this news still comes off as a bit troubling in light of recent events.
It’s worth noting that Oskari Hakkinen, the former head of franchise development for Remedy, also left the company about a week ago to start his own studio. So that makes two top level executives at the company jumping ship not that long after Quantum Break’s second delay was announced.
Perhaps Microsoft will show off the title at E3 in two weeks, and all current concerns will evaporate. After all, Microsoft did claim that the delay to 2016 was simply to avoid a congested holiday schedule, and not because of a problem with development. But until then, gamers may want to lower their expectations for the Xbox One exclusive until more details come out.
Quantum Break will release on Xbox One in 2016.
