After hearing that Armageddon will be more akin to the original Red Faction experience than the entirely open world Guerrilla, this is welcome news. Fans of the reinvention of Red Faction should be pleased that the GeoMod 2.0 technology will not be completely taking a backseat to the more focused storyline and gameplay of Armageddon.
The following trailer, although entirely too haphazard to gather much information from, should clear any doubts that the series is taking a step too far back into Red Faction’s FPS history. The sheer amount of chaos on display gives the impression that we might as well just be looking at another map pack for Wrecking Crew.

Volition’s Eric Barker has quite a bit to say about Red Faction: Armageddon in our exclusive interview. For Ruin Mode, the team wants to assure players that though the focus on fun remains intact, there will be plenty of variety and challenge to keep the players coming back for more.
All in all, Armageddon seems to be taking the best of both worlds in terms of the intricate and involved story of the original Red Faction and infusing the destruction and light-hearted fun of the most recent sequel to create what could be one of the stand-out shooters of 2011. It might still be too early to tell, but this is definitely one summer game worth keeping your eyes on.
