The title, which is 70% done, according to Capcom PR, will trade in storytelling for the fast-paced, time limited gameplay that has made “Mercenaries” one of the most enjoyable aspects of recent Resident Evil games. If you were interested in a story driven Resident Evil game for the 3DS, you can always have another look at the trailer for Resident Evil: Revelations.

As for Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D, information obtained from the Japanese publication Famitsu offered plenty of information regarding characters and gameplay.

A partial roster of characters was revealed, with the game set to contain all familiar faces from the Resident Evil franchise: Jack Krauser (Resident Evil 4), Chris Redfield (Resident Evil 1, 5), Claire Redfield (Resident Evil 2), and Hunk (Resident Evil 2). There’s still a large variety of protagonist characters Capcom can add to the roster, fingers crossed for the return of Tofu.

The Mercenaries will be an updated port of the game mode, with one very significant change according the game’s director, Kazuhisa Inoue - the player will now (read: finally) be able to move and shoot in a Resident Evil game. Mercenaries implements a first-person view (which the player may choose to use at all times) where players can keep their gun out - and ready to fire.

About the dramatic change, Inoue had this to say:

While certainly not confirmed, it can be inferred that the Mercenaries will have the player tapping with their stylus to aim/shoot bullets - if that’s the case, headshots have never been easier.

Another brand new implement in The Mercenaries is the ability to customize your character, with a RPG-like system that upgrades individual character abilities, Inoue further explains:

Customizable characters that get better the more zombies you kill? Sounds like a great, addictive formula. Inoue did not add any details regarding what kind of skills each particular character might possess, but if you played any of the previous Mercenaries incarnations, Mercenaries 3D could offer something similar to the contextual actions that provide a more powerful and quick way to kill zombies - much like in Resident Evil 4 when Leon could move from roundhouse kicking zombies to suplexing them.
